The Money Museum Showcase features rare and historic items from the ANA's Edward C. Rochette Money Museum and items generously lent to the ANA from private collections. Here are a few highlights of what to expect this year.
Two Extraordinarily Rare U.S. Pattern Sets from the Black Cat Collection
This exhibit features the only remaining complete 16-coin 1868 Aluminum Die Trial Proof Set. These coins were struck in aluminum at a time when it was more valuable than gold! Only eleven sets were created, all of which, except this one, have been broken up.
The second set is a complete Proof Set of 1882 Liberty Head Shield Earring coins in copper and silver, illustrating how Liberty could have looked had the designs been selected. These coins are remarkable for their rarity, especially as part of a complete set, and their spectacular conditions.
This exhibit on display courtesy of the Black Cat Collection via Legend Numismatics.
Bank of the United States Notes
Conventioneers can see highlights of United States obsolete notes from a recent donation to the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum by ANA Life Members John & Nancy. This extensive collection includes checks signed by President Andrew Jackson and General Winfield Scott.
Parthia; The Forgotten Empire
Parthia was one of the great empires of the Middle East – centered on modern Iran and Iraq – and the only civilized empire that managed not only to survive contact with the expanding Roman Empire but even defeat it on multiple occasions. Yet it is largely neglected in the history books despite almost 500 years of existence and having a long numismatic history.
America's First Struck Silver Dollar
GreatCollections, the ANA's Official Auctioneer, will display a spectacular example of what is widely believed to be the very first Silver Dollar struck by the United States. The 1794 Silver Dollar, graded SP-66 by Professional Coin Grading Services and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation, is one of about 140 silver dollars that exist today. This will be the last time the coin is available for viewing at a major show for a while – it is being delivered to the new owner a few weeks after the World's Fair of Money.
Tyrants of the Nile
The latest Tyrant Collection exhibit – Tyrants of the Nile – will debut during the World's Fair of Money. Valued at $5 million, this display presents a comprehensive timeline of Egyptian history that dates back millenia.
From the earliest coin struck in ancient Egypt to a 1938 King Farouk gold proof "Royal Wedding" 500 piastres, this exhibit is packed with show-stopping treasures from a dynamic and revered civilization.
The biggest draw is a c. 361-342 B.C. gold stater struck under the only Egyptian pharaoh who issued a coin, Nectanebo II. The obverse displays a galloping horse (typical of the Hellenistic period). The reverse shows the Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol of a human heart. This is the finest known example of this rare coin.
Third-Party Grading at the Convention
Numismatic Guaranty Company(NGC), the Official ANA grading service, will be accepting submissions for on-site grading during show hours, Tuesday through Saturday (check with table staff for cut-off time).
Professional Coin Grading Services (PCGS) will be accepting submissions for on-site grading through Friday, August 9 at noon. Take home submissions cutoff is Saturday, August 10 at 1 pm.
Can't make the show?
ANA will be livestreaming select activities and events during the convention to the ANA's Facebook page (facebook.com/numismatics). Live streamed events will include a tour of the Money Museum Showcase, the Tyrant Collection exhibit "Tyrants of the Nile," the 1794 Silver Dollar at GreatCollections' booth, the ribbon cutting ceremony, historic reenactors, Coolest Thing in Your Booth chats with attendees, and more!
Videos will also be posted to the ANA YouTube channel of the convention throughout the week. Visit youtube.com/@MoneyOrg to see what's happening.
Security Tactics for Dealers Attending Coin Shows
Dealers who participate in coin shows are potential targets of numismatic predators. These tactics and practices provide dealers and their employees a basic safety plan that will help reduce the chances of becoming a numismatic crime victim.
This class will feature one of the largest collections of Chinese-made counterfeits of United States colonials, coins, tokens, bullion and bars. Hundreds of never before seen, recently made examples will be available to examine along with the ANA's Counterfeit Detection set of older and highly deceptive fakes. This seminar will teach counterfeit detection of Key Date and Mintmarked coins, US gold coins, and the latest wave of deceptive Chinese-made counterfeits. There will be both digital presentation and extensive hands-on coin examination.
